Barani Karunakaran was born in Butterworth, Penang, on 26 October 1979 to Karunakaran A. Dorrasamy, an electrical technician and Angallamay Ruthnam, a housewife. After completing his higher secondary in Dato Onn High School, Penang, he pursued higher education and obtained his Double Degree in Medicine & Computer Science. In 2013 he was conferred with an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy in International Trade and Economics by World Peace University, followed by his conferment of Professorship. In 2018, he completed his Executive Masters in Applied Management Science.
It was in 2000 that he was introduced to an American-based direct-selling company by an American Entrepreneur. He was involved in multilevel marketing (MLM) full-time, making him Malaysia's youngest millionaire. He then started an information technology company Multisoftnet Technologies Sdn. Bhd, which is a software development and Information technology service provider company. In 2012 he began looking at the MLM industry more seriously, which made him found a multilevel marketing company Destina1 International that grew and expanded as Destina 1 Group of Companies.
Destina 1 Group of Companies consists of Destina 1 International Sdn Bhd, Shoppymore Global Sdn Bhd and Multisoftnet Dot Com Sdn Bhd in more than 30 countries. Today Destina1 Group is involved in Information Technology Industry, Online Education Systems, Wellness, Health & Beauty, Training, and Luxury Products. Destina1 has regional offices in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, The United States of America, Canada, India, Ghana, Nigeria, The Philippines and the British Virgin Islands.

When he was 20 years old, Dato’ Sri Dr Barani Karunakaran got inspired by his father, Prof Dr Karunakaran Dorrasamy and thought of entering into the marketing field by joining a business platform called Skybiz.
Within 2 years, Dr Barani Karunakaran became the youngest millionaire in the country and was featured in the World-famous business magazine The Inspirator International by the World-Famous Business Guru Zig Ziglar.
